Comparison is the Thief of Joy

comparison is the thief of joyDo you constantly compare yourself to others? How does that make you feel?

Comparison can be a double-edged sword. It can empower you or it can disempower you.

If you look at others and think “Look what they’ve got. It’s not fair”, if you feel jealousy or envy at others’ achievements, this is disempowering. Have you ever thought like that and noticed just how ‘heavy’ that feels in your body? It weighs you down, holds you back, stops you from achieving your potential of a better life.

“Comparison is the thief of joy” – Theodore Roosevelt

However, if you look at others and think “That’s amazing what they’ve achieved. I wonder what it would take for me to do that/have a life like that? I’m sure I could do that too, or at least do something towards that”, then that is far more empowering. It drives you into action, shows you your own potential. You feel ‘light’, you feel energised and you feel powerful!

It is that feeling of joy that lifts you, that allows you to fly higher.

It is only the thought of comparison that stifles you, and you can choose to change the direction of your thoughts.

Then how do you achieve that? You can use others’ examples to show you what you can set as your goal. But then, drop the comparison against others, and focus on yourself. Focus on your own advancement towards that goal, day by day, celebrate your own achievements, however small.

Tell yourself:
